THE DETAILS BEFORE THE DECISION.

Server memory compatibility: ECC, RDIMM and ranks

Check server memory compatibility by generation, ECC, module type, rank and population rules before selecting an exact replacement part.

A reliable server memory upgrade starts with the platform’s memory population guide. The right part must satisfy several requirements at once: generation, module type, capacity, rank and the configuration supported by the installed processors.

Identify the server and processor configuration

Record the exact server model, processor model and number of installed processors. Memory slots can be attached to particular processors, so the number of physical slots alone does not tell you which slots are usable. Follow the manufacturer’s slot ordering and channel guidance.

Match the module type

UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM describe different module designs. They are not universally interchangeable. Do not mix module types unless the platform documentation explicitly supports that configuration. A server requiring registered memory must use a supported registered module.

Understand ECC support

System-level ECC depends on compatible memory, a supporting memory controller and the platform. DDR5’s on-die error correction operates within individual memory chips and does not replace a platform’s system-level ECC requirements. Check the complete specification, not just an ECC label.

Check rank, capacity and population limits

Rank describes how memory chips on a module are organised. A platform can impose capacity, rank and speed limits that change with the number of modules per channel. Adding modules can therefore affect the attainable data rate. Use the server’s supported configuration tables before buying.

Keep a clear record of the existing parts

Note the full manufacturer part number on each existing module and where it is installed. For replacements, confirm that the proposed part is supported in your exact system. For expansion, plan the complete final configuration rather than judging a new module in isolation.

Build an exact specification brief

Use the DIMMVAULT catalogue to compare capacity, data rate, ECC and module type. Add suitable references to your shortlist and include your server model and current configuration in the downloaded brief. The shortlist supports planning; it is not a compatibility certification or an order.
